Herringbone Parquet Flooring – Solid Oak

On this project we had the pleasure of fitting our very popular traditional solid oak herringbone in a beautiful Victorian style house. This particular batch of oak parquet flooring we received from our manufacturer when we had ordered a container, which we needed for another project which was for St Catherine’s Church on Meath Street. This batch had some of the most stunning grains and tones we have ever received and as this was a solid block it showed off the tones even more so throughout the floor. The clients were so impressed when they see the batch of parquet flooring in St Catherine’s Church that they immediately decided to have it supplied and fitted in their own home.

MM Parquet & Carpentry provided a full site survey when suppling and fitting any parquet flooring, on arrival at this house we could see there were some levelling issues with the sub-floors. For us to continue with fitting of the parquet flooring we had to immediately fix the original floorboards. The floorboards were in bad condition and could not be removed as there was a preservation order on the property, so we had to screw and fix a 6mm plywood base to smooth out the subfloors. This had to be done as all traditional parquet flooring must be glued to a subfloor, so we had to go with the plywood option. Once all these works were completed, we were ready to fit the parquet flooring.

This stunning Victorian style house had very high ceilings with a very large ornate coving we had suggested to the client to go with a four-block deep border with a 12mm American walnut inlay to really help the parquet flooring stand out. Once we laid it out on the floor for the client to look at it, they were delighted to go with this option. We were very happy to proceed with the layouts of this styled parquet flooring.

We then ran into another small issue with the skirting, as you need to remove skirting when fitting parquet flooring, this option was not available to us as the skirting had years of old filler and paint on them. So, if we tried to remove the skirtings there would be more damage done.

So, MM Parquet & Carpentry have a unique way of getting around this issue. As most people hate quadrant slips around the edges of floor and most other flooring companies go for this easy option, we can make up a matching mdf plant on skirting, once this is fitted and paint onto your original skirting, you will never notice it and you still get to have that full skirting look and the parquet flooring will have room to expand with no issues.

Once all fittings were completed, we then were able to move onto sanding and polishing the parquet flooring. This is a traditional parquet flooring, so it has a square edge and involves a little bit more sanding and filling to bring the parquet flooring up to the standard to be able to apply a finish. We applied 3 coats of Morrells sat/matt lacquer which was the preferred choice by the client, and we used an enhanced colouring tone to really help invigorate the tone and the grain throughout this stunning batch of parquet flooring.
